In the fall of 1978, professional bank robber Thomas Crown is itching to go on a new heist. But when an old buddy from his criminal days makes a shocking suggestion, Crown resists the temptation. Eight years later, restless and craving action, Crown is tempted once again by a longtime criminal associate who knows of a bank that's just right for the taking. What starts out as fun and games escalates into a breathless race against time as Crown juggles two women who offer him love and money--and another old friend from his past who threatens to expose him unless he pays up with interest. Crown is a thief with a split personality. The usual method of his robberies is to use a disguise as a member of the general public, walk into a bank and steal as much as he can carry. In one of his first jobs, Crown dresses as an elderly man and holds up the bank with no problem. However this is abandoned after being discovered on more than one occasion and it turns out that instead of buying all the money in banks, Crown would simply sit around and wait for them to open the next day. A successful businessman named Mr. Shaw approaches Crown and offers him $10 million to steal millions in bearer bonds from the safety deposit box of the First Boston Bank. Shaw is managing director of the bank, but it is revealed that he was actually working for a criminal organization called The Exchange. Crown, who has done massive amounts of drugs, decides that he is willing to give Shaw's proposal some thought before giving his decision. This friendly help allows him to have a closer look into Shaw's dark side. He later tells his girlfriend Catherine Banning, an industrialist's daughter/ex-fugitive he met at a party thrown by industrialist Walter Havens, about his troubles. She tells him that he is perfect for the job. Crown decides to go ahead with the bank robbery, but by doing so, he realizes that he has fallen in love with Catherine. He chooses not to tell Catherine about his intentions, but instead asks her to help him by acting as his lawyer should anything go wrong. Catherine agrees. Crown's robbery of the bank goes smoothly, and he manages to evade police detection by walking out of the bank during a high-level meeting between members of The Exchange. Shortly after walking out of the building, Crown calls Shaw and informs him that the job has been "completed" and that they could meet at a hotel later that day to collect his fee. Crown and Catherine arrive at the hotel, where Shaw is waiting for them. Both Crown and Catherine are surprised and mildly disappointed that he has brought along a bodyguard to protect him. Shaw shows Crown the money that has been stolen from the safety deposit box: $1,000,000 in uncut United States Notes. The exchange is now satisfied with Crown's performance and informs him that they will not contact him again. While driving back to New York their car breaks down in a run down part of town.
